Diana, Princess of Wales, is to be celebrated with a blue plaque in what would have been her 60th birthday year.

English Heritage on Thursday announced its 2021 plaques for six women, who also include the anti-slavery campaigner Ellen Craft; Caroline Norton, who helped change Britain’s divorce laws; and the fashion designer Jean Muir.

UK prepared to play leading role in project given new impetus by Ever Given blockage, say sources

The blockage of the Suez canal by the beached Ever Given container ship has prompted fresh international efforts to find an alternative to the world’s most important shipping corridor.

UN officials are understood to be reviewing plans to construct a new canal along the Egypt-Israel border, having previously dismissed ideas for a much longer route through Iraq and Syria as too hazardous.

Increase for UK’s lowest-paid workers comes as household bills rise

Statutory minimum wages go up on same day as inflation-busting increases to utility and phone bills

Approximately 2 million of the UK’s lowest-paid workers will receive a raise from Thursday after increases to statutory minimum wage rates. However, many workers are unlikely to feel better off as the pay rise comes on the same day as inflation-busting increases hit household bills.

Workers aged 23-24 are expected be the biggest beneficiaries after the government announced that they will start receiving the new minimum living wage of £8.91 a hour – up from the £8.20 a hour they are currently entitled to.

Officers arrested Darrell Hunter, 45, after he repeated threatened an Asian American woman in a bakery, police say

Police said Wednesday that they arrested a man who repeatedly threatened an Asian American woman inside a San Francisco bakery and in one instance mimicked a gun with his hand and simulated shooting the people inside.

Darrell Hunter, 45, was arrested Tuesday near the business in the Tenderloin neighborhood after the woman called police, officer Adam Lobsinger said in a statement.

The UN envoy on Myanmar has implored the security council to intervene in the escalating crisis, warning of the risk of civil war and an imminent “bloodbath” as the junta violently represses pro-democracy protests.

“I appeal to this council to consider all available tools to take collective action and do what is right, what the people of Myanmar deserve, and prevent a multidimensional catastrophe in the heart of Asia,” special envoy Christine Schraner Burgener told the closed-door session.

About 15m doses of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccines have been ruined due to a mixup at a Baltimore plant, forcing regulators to delay authorization of the plant’s production lines, the New York Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The plant is run by Emergent BioSolutions, a manufacturing partner to both Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca Plc, according to the report.
