UK’s south Asian communities worst-hit in Covid second wave, study finds

Suitable prevention measures urgently needed, say researchers, with larger households highlighted as a factor

People in the UK’s south Asian communities were more likely to test positive for Covid, become severely ill and die than any other minority ethnic group in the country’s second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new study.

During the first wave from February to September 2020, the paper in the Lancet medical journal found, all minority ethnic groups had a higher risk than the white community of testing positive for Covid, ending up in hospital, being admitted to intensive care, and dying, after accounting for any underlying health conditions. But in the second wave, from September to December 2020, minority ethnic groups did better – except for the south Asian communities.

Wallasey in Merseyside tops list of British property hotspots

Wirral town records biggest rise in asking prices over the past year according to Rightmove

Wallasey in Merseyside has topped a table of property hotspots after recording the biggest rise in asking prices over the past year of any town and city in Britain, according to the listings site Rightmove.

Homes coming on to the market in the Wirral town were being listed at an average of £176,707 in March, an increase of 15.6% compared with March 2020, the website said. The area is one of seven in its top 10 that are in the north-west of England.

Covid rule that ‘turned care homes into prisons’ to be scrapped

Residents in England will no longer have to self-isolate if they leave home and remain outdoors

A rule forcing care home residents who go on any sort of outside visit to then spend two weeks in their room is being scrapped, the government announces today. Campaigners have hailed the reversal, with one group saying the regulation had turned “care homes into prisons”.

Under new guidance to begin from Tuesday, people living in care homes in England will not have to self-isolate if they leave the home to be in the garden of a relative or friend, or to visit outdoor spaces such as parks and beaches.

England awarded victory over France after floodlights fail in second half

England extended their winning streak over France to nine games but in extraordinary circumstances.

With 62 minutes gone, the Stadium Lille Métropole was plunged into darkness as a result of floodlight failure. The decision was then made to call the match a 17-15 win to England, with the score when play stopped deemed to be final.

Palestinian Abu Zubaydah, detained for 19 years without trial, takes US, UK and five other countries before panel

A Palestinian man held in Guantánamo Bay is taking the US, the UK and five other states before a UN human rights panel for their role in the CIA rendition and detention of terrorism suspects at “black sites” around the world.

The unusual case is being brought to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions (UNWGAD) by Zayn Al-Abidin Muhammad Husayn, known as Abu Zubaydah, who has been detained for 19 years without trial.

Brazilian Amazon released more carbon than it absorbed over past 10 years

International team of researchers also found that deforestation rose nearly four-fold in 2019

The Brazilian Amazon released nearly 20% more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over the past decade than it absorbed, according to a startling report that shows humanity can no longer depend on the world’s largest tropical forest to help absorb manmade carbon pollution.

From 2010 through 2019, Brazil’s Amazon basin gave off 16.6bn tonnes of CO2, while drawing down only 13.9bn tonnes, researchers reported Thursday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

In a joint statement by Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel and David Sassoli, the heads of the European commission, council and parliament said Moscow’s action on Friday had been “groundless”.
