Video appears to show officer firing at fleeing car in incident fueling calls for removal of armed officers from schools

An 18-year-old woman is on life support after a school safety officer shot her near a high school in Long Beach, California, this week, sparking outrage and renewing calls for armed officers to be removed from schools.

The victim, identified by her family as Manuela Rodriguez, was shot while in a moving vehicle on Monday afternoon. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Manchester City head for Anfield, how best for Manchester United to utilise Paul Pogba and time for Leeds to step up a gear

Manchester City fans have not been in attendance for a league win at Anfield since 2003, when Nicolas Anelka scored two. What City would do to have the option of a player of Anelka’s ilk in his prime. After every game in which City fail to score, like in Paris, questions will be asked of their striking options. They were unable to get past Southampton, won via a deflected strike at Chelsea and were shut out by PSG despite dominating the game. They will need to decide who will get the nominal nod down the middle. Phil Foden operated there at Chelsea and offered control, Ferran Torres and Raheem Sterling have pace to stretch a Liverpool defence that failed to get to grips with Brentford or Pep Guardiola could decide to back Gabriel Jesus to perform as a more traditional striker. City need to find consistency in the final third, which is not always easy when things rotate and change so much. WU

Home Office, Foreign Office and MoJ worst for openness, finds report

Research into government transparency by leading thinktank shows some departments release far less information than they should

The Home Office, the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Justice have been named as the worst-performing government departments for transparency by a leading thinktank.

A report by the Institute for Government (IFG) has analysed information that is supposed to be regularly released across Whitehall showing the people ministers, civil servants and special advisers meet, and the gifts and hospitality they receive.

The Home Office published the required data on senior officials’ meetings in just three of 23 quarters between the 2015 election and March 2021.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which was created in September 2020, did not publish any information on meetings held by ministers or officials until September 2021.

The Ministry of Justice is by far the least reliable department on ministerial releases, often publishing data late, and failing to publish any information on five occasions.

The MoJ is also the least reliable department on special adviser data, failing to publish on six occasions.

‘Red wall’ Tories call on Rishi Sunak to cut business rates

MPs elected in former Labour heartlands in 2019 say tax reform is needed to stem high street closures

Conservative MPs in “red wall” seats have urged the chancellor to cut business rates, days after Labour announced it would abolish the tax and overhaul the system.

Tory MPs who won seats in 2019 in Labour’s northern heartlands, including Bishop Auckland’s Dehenna Davison, Leigh’s James Grundy and Lee Anderson from Ashfield, said high street shops were most at risk of closure in seats that Boris Johnson had promised to prioritise with levelling up.
