Raphinha holds nerve and grabs vital win for Leeds against Crystal Palace

Raphinha’s injury-time penalty secured a potentially priceless Premier League victory for Leeds United against Crystal Palace on a night when it looked as though their profligacy in front of goal without Patrick Bamford would come back to haunt them once again. Marcelo Bielsa’s side had dominated the majority of this contest against a Palace side, who could have gone seventh with a win of their own.

But chance after chance came and went without the deadlock being broken, and it looked as though Bielsa and Leeds would have to settle for a point. That was before Marc Guéhi handled in the Palace area, and Raphinha, Leeds’ best player on the night, coolly sent Vicente Guaita the wrong way to move Leeds further clear of the bottom three.

Benítez stays upbeat while Everton fans fear Merseyside derby doomsday

Supporters’ worst-case scenario is unfolding with team on winless run as manager says club need to sell players at a profit

Evertonians of a glass-completely-empty persuasion envisaged a doomsday scenario when Farhad Moshiri appointed Rafael Benítez five months ago. It went something like this: fragile support for the new manager erodes along with the team’s form before the Merseyside derby, Liverpool inflict further punishment, the atmosphere turns poisonous and Benítez’s name is sung for the first time since his arrival but only by 2,902 away fans in the Bullens Road stand as they also reminisce about Istanbul. Everton’s board shields its own dreadful performances behind an unpopular manager, and on and on it goes …

It is a derby, anything can happen (though eight of the past nine league meetings at Goodison have ended in draws) but any or all of the above occurring on Wednesday would come as no great surprise. “It is a massive game for us,” said a more positive Benítez. “It is an opportunity for us to change things and improve everything for the rest of the season.”

Ex-IS member guilty of genocide for chaining up Yazidi girl to die in the sun

Defendant convicted in a German court after enslaving a Yazidi woman and her five-year-old daughter

In a landmark verdict, a former member of the Islamic State group has been found guilty of genocide by a German court over the death of a five-year-old Yazidi girl he had bought as a slave and then chained up in the hot sun to die.

The Frankfurt regional court also convicted Taha Al-J of crimes against humanity, war crimes and bodily harm resulting in death. The 29-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay the girl’s mother €50,000 (£42,600).

Norwich’s Teemu Pukki denies 10-man Newcastle first win with powerful strike

It might have been very different had Ciaran Clark not self-destructed in the ninth minute but that will be of no consolation to Eddie Howe.

Clark’s idiotic sending off left Newcastle down to 10 men and in the sort of trouble that even Callum Wilson’s second-half penalty could not quite camouflage. Despite a rather wonderful display of defiance from the home side, Teemu Pukki’s stupendous volley means Howe’s side remain bottom of the Premier League, still awaiting their first win of the season. The Championship surely beckons.

Britain’s Davis Cup hopes dashed by Germany in doubles defeat

  • Salisbury and Skupski pay for missed chances in tiebreak
  • Evans wins but Norrie beaten by Struff as GB bow out

Great Britain’s Davis Cup team arrived in Innsbruck, Austria filled with ample hope about their prospects after a great year for all their players involved, and during their visit they registered two solid wins, but on Tuesday evening they were unable to take a further step forward as they exited the competition with a bitter 2-1 defeat by Germany.

A turbulent day began with the high of Dan Evans bouncing back after a tough singles loss on Sunday to play a consistent, disciplined match in defeating Peter Gojowyczk 6-2, 6-1. In the singles rubber between the No 1s, Cameron Norrie was edged out 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2 by a spirited Jan-Lennard Struff.
