‘We only have a pen’: fury as fourth journalist killed in Mexico this year

Roberto Toledo was shot dead by three gunmen in a carpark in Zitácuaro, where he reported for a local news outlet

Journalists in Mexico have responded with fury and despair at the the murder of a fourth reporter in the country this year, cementing the country’s reputation as the world’s most murderous country for media workers.

Roberto Toledo was shot dead by three gunmen on Monday afternoon in a carpark in the city of Zitácuaro, where he reported for a local news outlet, Monitor Michoacán. Zitácuaro is best known for the nearby monarch butterfly reserves, but the region is rife with violence as drug cartels and criminal groups fight to control illegal logging.

Scotland wary of ‘unpredictability’ of England playmaker Marcus Smith

  • Harlequins fly-half impressed Scotland coaches on Lions tour
  • Smith expected to make his Six Nations debut at Murrayfield

Scotland have been told to keep a close eye on Marcus Smith if they want to make a winning start in the Six Nations. England’s fly-half impressed on last summer’s British & Irish Lions tour and within the Scotland camp there is a belief that he poses the biggest threat to their Calcutta Cup prospects.

Smith has not played in the Six Nations before but his autumn form for England and match-turning performances for Harlequins have made him a key figure in the view of Scotland’s defence coach, Steve Tandy. “He is an outstanding individual,” said Tandy, also a member of the Lions coaching staff. “He has an outstanding kicking game, makes really good decisions, hits the line and opens the game up a little bit more. There is an unpredictability about him as well so we know we are going to have to be on the money defensively.”

Janet Jackson review – the breathtaking tale of a reluctant pop superstar

Was ‘Nipplegate’ premeditated filth? Why did the singer fire her dad? And how often was she at Neverland with Michael in the 90s? The singer shares her story in this rare retrospective

‘This is a story about control,” whispered Janet Jackson on the title track of her 1986 album. The singer’s new four-part documentary (Sky Documentaries) is an attempt to control her own story. Executive produced by Jackson and her brother Randy, and five years in the making, the series consolidates her 40 years as a recording artist. It is also Jackson reasserting herself in the first person, after years away from public view.

Hearing directly from Jackson is an increasingly rare event. Her soft voice was missing from the New York Times’ 2021 documentary Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, which focused on “Nipplegate”, the Super Bowl fiasco in 2004 that kneecapped her music career. By the time she apologised on Oprah, the damage was done. Jackson has made it clear that the split-second wardrobe malfunction was an embarrassing accident, but in the eyes of the conservative US it was premeditated “filth” inflicted on innocent audiences. The event overshadowed her legacy as one of the biggest pop stars of the 80s and 90s. (Here, it is covered in the final episode, the only one unavailable for preview at the time of writing.)
