Christmas may have been partially salvaged for Sydney’s coronavirus-hit northern beaches, but experts are calling on authorities to consider canning the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The Australian Medical Association president, Omar Khorshid, has welcomed NSW’s four-tier system for Christmas gatherings which begins on Thursday, describing it as a “cautious approach”.

Police say they are expecting long delays on the Tweed Heads-Coolangatta border. Yesterday, travellers waited up to 90 minutes on the NSW-Queensland border.

Delayed Covid vaccines for poor countries ‘will leave Europe vulnerable for years’

Wealthier countries will be dealing with coronavirus in 2022 and beyond, says UN humanitarian agency chief

Poorer countries are unlikely to gain substantial access to Covid-19 vaccines until the latter half of next year, meaning wealthier European countries could still remain vulnerable to new waves of infection for years, the UN’s humanitarian chief has said.

“For poorer countries there will be small quantities of vaccine conceivably in the second quarter of next year, probably not much more than that for a while after that, and it’s 2022 and beyond when the major progress is made,” Mark Lowcock, the under-secretary-general of the UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA, said in an interview. “That is a best judgment, recognising large quantities depend on the number of vaccines authorised, the manufacturing and then the solution the world comes to on who accesses what when.”

South Australia’s Parafield cluster has been declared “closed” by health authorities after the state marked four weeks since the last coronavirus case linked to the outbreak went into quarantine.

The cluster initially forced the state into a short lockdown, after health authorities linked positive cases to a cleaner and a security guard at the Peppers medi-hotel, as well as the Woodville Pizza Bar.

Double-demerit points will come into force in NSW from midnight tonight, lasting until 3 January.

The extra demerits apply to speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences, and police are targeting speeding as well as drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving, AAP report.

Chant is asked about hotel quarantine, given two different airport workers have now seemingly contracted the virus from returned travellers in the past week.

“Clearly there’s some leakage in the system,” she is asked.

NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant has confirmed that a Victorian, who was visiting the northern beaches and returned home and later tested positive, stopped at Gundagai on the way home.

Earlier, neither the Victorian health minister Martin Foley nor Covid response leader Jeroen Weimar could confirm whether the town was Gundagai or Gunnedah.

And on that news, the Victorian health minister, Martin Foley, and chief health officer Prof Brett Sutton will hold a press conference at 10am.

Victoria has today recorded a new Covid-19 case, acquired on the northern beaches of Sydney. The person is in quarantine.

“Victoria has recorded 0 cases in 53 days, however one positive case from a returned Victorian traveller was acquired within the Northern Beaches area of NSW,” the health department said.

Chant is asked what factors will determine whether restrictions will be lifted on Wednesday in time for Christmas.

The key things we’re looking for is whether we have any evidence of community spread outside the northern beaches. What we’re interested in is making sure that we don’t see any further transmission that is not linked exactly to the Avalon cluster.

Chant says that “a number” of the 15 new cases had already been in isolation before they were infectious – which is good to limit the spread.

The anecdotal feedback from the staff who are collating that is that a number of the cases have been isolating.
