Campaigners and politicians held in wave of arrests under the national security law

Dozens of pro-democracy politicians and campaigners have been arrested in Hong Kong under the national security law, reportedly over accusations they “subverted state power” by saying they intended to win a majority of seats in local elections.

The sweeping arrests on Wednesday morning came without warning, and shocked observers. It is the largest single mass arrest of people under the national security law (NSL), more than doubling the number of people apprehended for suspected violations.
